Log House, Victoria. BC

The Log House Burger

A homemade charbroiled fresh beef patty topped with cheddar, edam and bacon.

A good pub burger but in the end just average, 7.5/10. The bun was fresh and tasty. The veggies were fresh and tasty. There was a good amount of cheese. But somehow, it just did not come together. The 6 oz patty was overdone, crispy and lost in the big scheme of things. Zero on the drip scale, no juice, no flavour. So, just ok for me. Next time I’m going for the Giant Burger; add a patty and an egg and let’s see what happens.

For those interested: 0.5/added to the score for really good home cut fries.

Tomahawk Barbeque, North Vancouver, BC. Canada

From the Menu:
We only buy and serve 100% premium certified ORGANIC ground beef from The Blue Goose Cattle Company! That means they ensure:
• No growth-hormones or antibiotics are ever administered to the herd.

• The animals are free to range and graze on organic pastures.

• The cattle receive a finishing feed of 100% organically grown grains.

I had the SKOOKUM CHIEF BURGER, Onions, lettuce, organic ground beef patty, Yukon bacon, egg, aged cheddar cheese, wiener, tomato, and Tomahawk special sauce. Pretty much everything and the kitchen sink.

I did not enjoy this burger. Very disappointing. I had high hopes for this place, winner of top burger in North Vancouver by the North Shore New Readers many years running. What do they see that I don’t?

The patty (kudo’s on the premium certified organic beef) was tiny, burnt and tasteless. It got totally lost in al the other stuff. I’m not against other stuff and huge packed burgers but the patty has to come through. Not be overpowered by everything else between the buns. I can still taste the weiner. Not necessarily a bad thing except that I had a hamburger and not a hotdog. Was there cheese in my burger? I don’t remember. I should not be asking myself these questions. It is with much disappointment that I give the Skookum Chief burger a 5.5/10. And its only this high because they have gone out of their way getting the good organic beef.
The Tomahawk does not serve liquor. Enjoy the art shot of the pop.

Dakota’s Restaurant, Chilliwack BC

Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles and onions. Hmm, sound familiar? Yup, this is a Big Mac, if, a Big Mac were actually a real burger.

This burger is a coronary waiting to happen, wow, 8/10. I had a rock gut for the remainder of the day as my body tried to digest all that meat and cheese and cholesterol. And just in case the burger didn’t have enough fat, the fries are of the breaded variety so they really soak in extra fat as well. That is not a criticism, that is what I think was expected from a burger this size. Come to think of it, this burger is actually a weight loss product. This burger is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 1200 – 1500 calories, if you have one in the morning, believe me you will not be able to eat anything for the rest of the day.
Canoe Brew Pub. Victoria, BC

This is a great looking place. On the waterfront in Victoria the Canoe Brew Pub looks like a renovated old boat building facility or marina warehouse. This is a cavernous space with exposed old wooden beams and brick walls. Nice house brewed beer and happy to say, awesome burger. I had the huge braised beef blue cheese burger with a Sirens Sons Pale Ale. From the Menu: Quist farms 8 oz fresh ground chuck patty, bbq braised beef short rib meat, blue cheese, bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato, beer braised onion, house sauce, kosher dill. Fantastic Burger, great flavors an easy 9/10. The blue cheese just came through as background flavor to give the burger an unexpected deep flavor. The burgers are hand made using fresh local beef from Quist Farms in the Cowichan Valley raised without antibiotics or growth hormones – awesome.

One small criticism, the short ribs were on the dry side (could have been a 10/10 otherwise), but all in this burger rocked.

I’m coming back for the Aussie Pub Burger next time.
